How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so important to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they can continue to do their job well.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but luckily glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will stay there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can blend your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from multiple different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if any streaks remain.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your gorgeous view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
